Allegation: Louis Leroy
" 'Impression - I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it . . . and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape.'

Motive
The compositions of the Ukiyo-e masters such as Hokusai and Hiroshige offered the Impressionists this precedent of tradition, albeit from another culture, and consequently the confidence to forge ahead with their new ideas.
EvidenceCamera
The invention of photography in 1839 affected artist's practice the most. Almost immediately the public wanted photographs, not paintings. Some artists questioned the need for copying the world around them when photographs could do the job with so little effort. |
EvidencePaint Tube
Before 1900 artists had begun experimenting with colour in ways that hadn't been possible before, as new chemical pigments were invented and the innovation of keeping paint in tin tubes kept these colours bright and fresh. |
